As a part of the NRF Fellowship Project on Materials-by-Design, School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) is looking to hire a Research Assistant with expertise in high-throughput synthesis of inorganic materials and optimization using machine learning. The Research Assistant will build upon our team’s experience toward developing high-throughput experimental platforms for synthesis, characterization and functional performance testing (thermoelectric performance, catalytic performance) of a library of materials.  The Research Assistant will focus on synthesizing and characterizing inorganic materials, specifically inorganic chalcogenides for thermoelectrics and metal alloy catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Additionally, the Research Assistant will conduct in-depth structural and elemental characterization and analysis of the materials using XRD, SEM-EDX and XPS. Finally, thermoelectric measurements experiments will be conducted. The Research Assistant should be able to utilize design-of-experiments and high-throughput experimental workflows. In addition, materials science and metallurgical concepts such as phase diagrams, mapping and separating different phases and oxidation states of compounds and rapid structural analysis are required. Finally, machine learning will be applied to guide experimental campaigns.

Key responsibilities:

• Conduct synthesis of inorganic thermoelectric materials using various high-throughput synthesis techniques.

• High-throughput synthesis of materials for CO2 reduction will also be conducted.

• Develop new high-throughput methods, and accordingly modify hardware for their execution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with operation departments for supporting operation in the area of inventory transactions and costing.
• Product cost simulation any time. Compute and maintain all cost of products manufactured in various divisions. Calculate 20 main products cost in monthly.
• Review and perform standard cost simulation bi-annually and present change impact (product design, material cost, forex) results to Accounts.
• BOM cost review, Engineering BOM cost update in anytime when requested.
• Involvement in Ad-hoc projects, price build-up for new products with operations.
• Prepare monthly inventory ageing report highlighting obsolete risk-buy material and analysis of the reasonableness of purchase & level of inventory.
• Half-yearly stock-take preparation and arrangement.
• Product cost variance analysis from Internal Order budget vs actual spending, purchasing price variance and production variance. From there, prepare product margin analysis.
• Periodical tracking preset direct labor/OH hour rate vs actual level of the rate.
• Other ad-hoc duties as per assigned by superior

RELATED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements

• Degree in Finance/Accountancy/Banking, ACCA or CPA with at least 3 years of working experience in related field is required
• Accurancy and attentive to detail
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Aptitude for numbers and quantitive skills
• Proficient in advance excel, and SAP system experience will be preferred

• Performing lab-scale and pilot-level compounding of new polymer / filler systems.
• Ÿ Performing injection moulding to prepare the test specimen for plastic testing.
• Ÿ To conduct polymeric material testing.
• Ÿ To maintain and upkeep test data, injection moulding process parameter, and all related documents.
• Ÿ Ensures that lab machinery is operated following established processing, quality, safety, and housekeeping procedures.
• Ÿ Cleans and prepares machinery for efficient changeovers and subsequent compounding & injection moulding process.
• Ÿ To conduct polymeric material testing.
• Ÿ To maintain and upkeep test data, injection moulding process parameter, and all related documents.
• Ÿ Trouble-shoots processing problems to ensure production of quality products.
• Ÿ Keep complete and accurate of process records.
• Ÿ Assists routine maintenance of machinery & auxiliary equipment.
• Ÿ Maintains surrounding work area according to established housekeeping standards.
• Ÿ Complies with established safety policies and procedures.
• Ÿ Any other responsibilities as and when assign by your superior due to changes in organization or business direction.
• Ÿ Undertake task/project assigned to achieve Organisational objectives.
