Introduction

In collaboration with the Woodlands Health (WH) and the National Health Group (NHG), the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and SingHealth, SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Built Environment and physical activity in Falls and Arthritis study (BE-FIT)". It addresses imminent health challenge on moving away from “sickcare” and pivoting towards preventive healthcare as part of the nationwide effort on Healthier SG. Within BE-FIT we envision motivating vulnerable older adults to engage in healthy behavior by providing recommendations on improving accessibility (as well as preception thereof), in urban environment for uptake of physical activity. A deeper understanding of the interactions and interplay between BE and the high burden of falls and OA as proposed within the BE-FIT is crucial towards informing data-driven decisions on urban design and how the mobility-impaired elderly interact with their physical environment.

Project background

Falls result in severe physical as well as psychological impact among older adults. Beyond physical implications on injury-related trauma and in severe cases death, the psychosocial impact of falling can also be excruciating. Fear of falling can result in vicious cycles of decreased activity as well social isolation. These in turn lead to lower muscle strength and higher risk of future falls. In a similar manner, osteo-arthritis (OA) can lead to fear of movement (kinesiophobia) resulting in reduction of physical activity levels.

Within Work package 3 (WP3) of the BE-FIT study, we investigate movement patterns and features of walking outdoors and in the neighbourhoods among vulnerable older adults (suffering from OA as well as at high risk of falling). We will acquire these movement patterns and features using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement units (wearables such as ZurichMOVE or Axivity) sensors. These sensors are equipped with triaxial accelerometers and gyrospcopes and provide assessment of aspects such as impact and swing behaviour during different movements. Specifically, we will be addressing the following research questions:

1. What are the kinematic characteristics of walking among older adults with OA and/or previous falls under ecological settings (neighbourhoods etc)?
2. Do the kinematic characteristics of naturalistic walking predict physical activity rates?
3. Does the design of walkways (including overall layout, e.g. design of curbs, pathways etc and accessibility features e.g. size of the curbs, or height of side walk, ramps vs stairs) impact overall levels of physical activity as well as specifics of walking quality?

Task/Job Description:

As a Research Assistant in the BE-FIT, you will be responsible to

• Design, implement, and test the measurement protocol on long term monitoring using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement unit sensors.
• Assist project management for BE-FIT research activities at SEC including project planning activities, effort estimates, and on-site and remote exchange with several research partners, especially at the CNRS, RRIS and WH.
• Conduct research for the BE-FIT long-term monitoring within the Work package 3, including participant recruitment and scheduling of measurements, but also communication with participants on replacement of sensors and battery charging, and finally storage of data collection.

With a passion for teaching and a flair for research in Engineering Design, you will meet with colleagues from all backgrounds to collaborate and develop your own niche in engineering design research. You will have the opportunity to leave your own mark by understanding what others have done before you, and the work they have developed up to now, and consequently contribute with your own vision of multidisciplinary design teaching and convergent engineering design research. Design is taught at all levels of higher education, including adult and executive learning . Building or strengthening a research interest around the teaching of technically grounded design or the application of design in engineering to the growth areas defined at SUTD (Sustainability, Cities, Aviation, Healthcare, and AI) will enable you to connect with all relevant stakeholders in and around SUTD.

Requirements

The candidate must have:

• A PhD in Engineering, with a proven record of teaching and research in engineering design and related topics
• Proven experience in working autonomously and in teams, multi-tasking between teaching and research
• An appetite for improving teaching and learning of engineering design
• A willingness to tackle complex problems in engineering design research, potentially spanning across multiple application domains
• The ability to interact both face-to-face as well as virtually with students, peers, and all relevant stakeholders
• The drive to network and engage with funding agencies and companies, and secure the necessary funding to conduct research and build a well-connected research team

The candidate can have:

• Experience in teaching in other educational environments, like executive education and/or lifelong learning
• Experience in designing and delivering short courses in various design-related topics
• A track record of advising Doctoral, Master, and undergraduate students in engineering design research
• Publications in leading engineering design research journals (e.g., Research in Engineering Design, Journal of Engineering Design, Design Science, Journal of Mechanical Design, Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing, and similar) and conferences (International Conference on Engineering Design, International Design Engineering Technical Conference, International DESIGN Conference, and similar)

Key Responsibilities :

• Manage all incoming documents via Hardcopy and Emails
• Upload claim documents to the imaging system
• Create all Claims Notification in operating systems
• Assist in replying to Internal and External Emails when creating Claims Notification
• Review all Annuity Medical Claims for the Assessor to approve
• Manage all Severe Disability Claims Review
• Perform a routine search for claims investigation ie email and call
• Print and sort correspondences with cheques (if any) for enveloping
• Provide administrative support on ad-hoc matters as and when needed

Requirements :

• 1- 2 years experience in the Insurance industry doing all admin duties
• Diploma holder
• Fresh graduates are welcome to apply too.

Accounting

· Day to day management of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivables, General Ledger and Balance sheet reconciliation

· Issue of invoice and purchase orders

· Implement, document, monitor and maintain financial policies and procedures with appropriate internal controls and measures.

· Oversee inventory records and management

· Assist in filing GST returns & corporate tax.

· Cash management

· On yearly basis, coordinate with accountant for auditing.

HR- related

· Submit CPF contribution

· Handle local staff and Foreign Workers' payroll

· Apply Renew & Issue of work permit.

· Dormitory check in & check out

· Update staff & workers leave application

Admin

· Answer and direct phone calls.

· Distribute and mailing documents.

· Develop and maintain a filling system

· Update and maintain office policies, procedures, insurance and contact list.

· Maintain office supplies.

· Provide general support to visitors.

· Ad hoc duties assigned by the Management

Requirements:

· Minimum 3 years of working experience in full set accounting and book-keeping

· Proficient in handling accounting software is a must. Experience in EZ Accounting software would be beneficial

· Able to work independently

· Strong proficiency in handling email, MS excel and word

· Good positive attitude with a bias for learning and improvement.
