The Role

The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC), established in 2012, is a research centre at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. LKYCIC aims to stimulate research on cities and urbanisation, and explore the role of technology, design and policy in providing urban solutions.

Within the Programme on Urban Innovation, we are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to contribute to the study of placekeeping, which involves the long-term management and maintenance of place. With a mixed-methods research approach, we will examine who the key stakeholders are in placekeeping, how they collaborate, and what facilitates or hinders their collaboration. The study aims to establish a methodology and framework that will enable the systematic investigation of placekeeping and inform future policies and practices related to placekeeping in Singapore.

About the Position:

This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about placemaking, placekeeping, and community engagement in urban planning and design and is looking to gain experience for a future career in research.

You will:

• Work closely with the Principal Investigator and research team to craft data collection tools, including survey and interview questionnaire
• Conduct fieldwork and data collection activities, including interviews, on-site observations, and surveys
• Assist in conducting qualitative content analysis of interview transcripts and documents related to placekeeping projects
• Assist in the analysis of quantitative and spatial data
• Assist to prepare manuscripts and reports for publication

Qualifications and Skills:

• A Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as urban planning, geography, urban design, public policy, sociology, or environmental psychology.
• Strong research and analytical skills, including analysing and synthesizing data from multiple sources.
• Demonstrated skills in quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis
• Proficiency in data analysis software/ programming language (e.g. NVivo, Atlas.ti, R, Python)

Job Description

We are looking for a research officer to apply biomolecular modelling methods, including homology modelling and molecular dynamics, to understand the molecular mechanisms of coding variants that are associated with type 2 diabetes. Where applicable, structures of protein–ligand, protein–protein, protein–nucleic acid complexes will be modelled to determine the effect of the mutation on these interactions. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to work on collaborative projects with experimental groups to develop therapeutics and understand biochemical mechanisms.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Design Engineer will be responsible for designing solutions encompassing both hardware and firmware for target applications identified by the Design Center.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The main design direction of the Design team is focused on machine learning and communications, with the goal of creating reference designs that allow Futures’ customers to implement their own systems at a second level.

By specializing in these areas, the Design Engineers can leverage their design experience and training to provide valuable support and add value to the customer's design process.

As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design process for solar power projects, from conceptualization to implementation. The Testing and Certification Engineer for the Asia & Pacific Open Testing and Integration Centre (OTIC) in Singapore will be responsible for conducting testing with customers and testing tool providers, analyzing and evaluating testing results to certify O-RAN components.

Main Responsibilities:

• To work with the testbed System Architect, Technical Manager, and the other team members to configure and test a device-under-test (DUT) / system-under-test (SUT) of different customers.
• To understand the test specification and certification specified by standards bodies such as 3GPP, O-RAN, ETSI.
• To work with customers and testing tool vendors to configure and integrate DUT / SUT and the testing tools to achieve the testing / integration / certification objectives.

Job Description

We are looking for a full-time Research Associate to work in the Urban Climate Resilience module of the Future Resilient Systems programme, with a focus on Digital Twin-Enabled District Energy System Resilience. The appointment is for at most 12 months. The appointment is expected to start early 2024.

This collaborative research concerns the development of a digital twin for urban climate resilience, especially with respect to building operational GHG emissions, and interactive decision support. As a first pilot study, a digital twin of district energy systems was created for the NUS campus to investigate how past events and possible future scenarios can affect the resilience of these systems. This digital twin comprises a data visualization platform and building energy demand models for scenario assessment. Electricity and cooling meter data were collected for several buildings on campus, as well as WiFi connection logs providing an estimate for the number of occupants in each building. Analyzing the data showed that buildings’ cooling systems are operated in a relatively centralized way, meaning that buildings consume energy for cooling whether they are occupied or not. To explore future scenarios for the case study area, these meter data were used to calibrate building energy demand models for a baseline year. Standards were used for other buildings to make appropriate assumptions for the needs for different building typologies. The platform allows to display these simulation results in a variety of ways, such as by typology, by energy use intensity, or by energy use per capita. Different forecast scenarios have been considered to investigate how different building system operation modes can support the transition to flexible work arrangements post-COVID. The scenarios show there is a significant potential for energy savings by operating buildings in a more occupant-driven way, where only occupied workspaces are actively conditioned.

To expand the platform, additional use cases have been considered, such as modelling the campus’ thermal networks to investigate the effects of different scenarios on the existing cooling infrastructure, or investigating how electric vehicle charging could be used for load management to increase demand flexibility and thus build resilience into the electrical grid. While the actual digital twin platform is being developed as a PhD research, you would contribute to the larger research through one or more building operational energy-related case studies.

Qualifications

• Candidate must have a Master’s degree with at least 2 years’ relevant work experience, and good knowledge, skills and expertise in relevant field or PhD candidates who have at least 2 years’ experience as a fulltime PhD student and expected to complete a PhD degree within six months of starting the appointment may also be considered

What You’re Responsible For

• Create 3D and 2D CAD mechanical part and assembly drawings that detail the product’s design intent, supported by engineering calculations where necessary.
• Be the Mechanical Engineering team leader and offer guidance to the team and mechanical engineers.

• Specify and manage product BOMs.
• Along with Sustaining Engineering, manage engineering changes via Engineering Change Notifications with supporting engineering documentation.

• Design & build mock-ups and prototypes by collaborating with vendors & technicians and/or via 3D printing.

What We’re Looking For

• Very good working experience in: 3D & 2D CAD software, preferably Autodesk Inventor with a working knowledge in 3D surfacing, dynamics and FEM (mechanical stresses).
• Sheet metal design, especially for non-stamping processes, such as bending, welding and laser cutting and applicable secondary processes such as powder coating, spray painting, electroplating, etc.
