Job Summary

The genomics lab is looking for a (Senior) Research Officer to support spatial genomics service, such as STOmics. The ideal candidate would be experienced in various techniques involved in STOmics workflows, and have a passion for troubleshooting, process improvement and training in a service lab.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Perform entire STOmics workflow from cryosectioning of tissues and deliver high quality results.
• Optimize new protocols for new sample types and troubleshoot for problematic results.
• Perform sample QC, prepare sequencing libraries, and perform high throughput sequencing.
• Write and update SOP and training documents. Ensure proper documentation of all processes.
• Interact with bioinformaticians and evaluate bioinformatics output.
• Maintain lab equipment & documentation in accordance with quality requirements.
• Supervise and train junior staff.
• Other ad-hoc projects as required.
• May need to perform shift duties as required.

Desired Skills and Competencies

• Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with minimal 2 years of related working experience.

Duties & Responsibilities
To prepare undergraduate lab classes in the structural engineering laboratory, which includes:
• preparation of the concrete material specimens for the lab classes
• preparation of the reinforced concrete beam specimens for the lab classes
• assist the students in the testing of various specimens during the lab classes
• to coordinate the disposal of specimens after the lab class
• to provide safety instructions and guidelines for students before and during the lab classes

To guide the undergraduate final year students in the use of heavy testing equipment:
• the safe operation of a large number of universal testing machines with the capacity from 30 ton to 100 ton
• safe operation of compression material testing with capacity up to 1000 tons
• safe operation of hydraulic actuators from 100 tons to 2000 tons
• to provide safety advice to the final year students working in the lab

To oversee software matters:
• Yearly license renewal on SAP 2000 and ETABS License for Design Project
• Administrator for Orcaflex software

To procure and maintain inventory records:
• Keeping and maintain records of fixed asset management, create FA number
• Procure and maintain records of chemical inventory/issuing, storage, MSDS and disposal of chemical waste

To enhance the safe work procedures and risk assessments of the heavy testing equipment in response to:
• different lab class requirement due to the foreseeable changes in the evolving curriculum in the College of Design and Engineering
• new final year research projects in emerging areas of structural resilience in response to the new research directions in the sea-level rise, climate change, etc.

Job Requirements

• At least a recognised Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering or related services.
• At least 2 year of relevant experience
• Competent in operating universal testing machines.
• Possess good knowledge of laboratory safety.
• Open to fixed term contract (2-year).
