The Director of CML is Professor Stephen Girvin, MPA Professor of Maritime Law.

CML is inviting applications from legal professionals and academic faculty in the field of maritime law to conduct research and to participate in the work of the Centre for a temporary period of one to two months, with possible extension of up to six months.

The suitable applicant should have a PhD degree in maritime law or maritime law related areas and a minimum of three years post-doctoral experience to be appointed to the position of Visiting Senior Research Fellow in CML.

Duties

The successful applicant will be expected to:

1. Conduct their own research.
2. Complete ONE Working Paper for CML’s Working Paper Series - to be submitted within one month from the end of the appointment and ONE refereed journal article with acknowledgements of the affiliation with CML.
3. Attend CML’s events and bi-monthly lunch seminars, as well as present a briefing on some recent issues of maritime law at one of these seminars.
4. In consultation with the Director of CML, offer one CLE (Continuing Legal Education) or CPD (Continuing Professional Development) seminar to practising professionals in Singapore.

The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Visiting Senior Research Fellow in CML:

1. The candidate will be of exceptional calibre.
2. The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research and a demonstrated ability and passion in assisting in the ongoing development of CML. The applicant should, therefore, submit a proposed research plan for consideration. The selection committee will consider the alignment of the proposed research with CML’s research strengths and priorities.

The staff would lead at least one project under supervision of the Principle Investigator (PI) and the scope of the project is on biomass valorization. The responsibilities will be as follow:

• To develop a well justified approach to achieve a goal, once a problem statement and/or a research scope is defined by the PI and the staff.

Job Description

The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Wang Xuesen & Professor Wee Thye Shen, Andrew on experimental studies of epitaxial moiré superstructures under a project on the Investigation of Practical Epitaxial Moiré Superstructures with Novel Electronic Properties.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

• To identify several overlayer-substrate material combinations suitable for epitaxial moiré superlattices
• To carry out epitaxial growth of the overlayer that forms a moiré superlattice on a substrate in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) chamber
• To analyze the atomic and electronic structures of epitaxial moiré superlattices using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS)
• To analyze experimental data, comparing with computational results and draft manuscripts for publication
• To provide guidance and assistance to the PhD and Master students doing similar experimental studies in this project.

Qualifications

• Qualifications / Discipline: PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science.

• Skills: Have a comprehensive understanding of the novel physical properties of material structures based on various 2D materials; Capable of using UHV sample preparation and film growth facilities to fabricate the epitaxial moiré superstructures, especially those made of Group-V (Sb, Bi, P) and Group IV-VI compounds (e.g., GeS, GeSe, SnS, and SnSe); Capable of in situ STM/STS analysis of the atomic and electronic structures of epitaxial moiré superstructures; Skills of performing LEED, XPS and ARPES analysis are also desirable; Strong skill of writing and oral communication in English.

• Experience: Has at least 4 years of: 1) Using Omicron UHV LT-STM systems for surface, nanostructures and thin film investigations; 2) surface cleaning, atomic layer and film deposition, especially involving materials of Group-V (Sb, Bi, P) and Group IV-VI compounds (e.g., GeS, GeSe, SnS, and SnSe); 3) UHV and low-temperature STM/STS analysis of the atomic and electronic structures of surfaces, thin films and nanostructures.
