Introduction

In collaboration with the Woodlands Health (WH) and the National Health Group (NHG), the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and SingHealth, SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Built Environment and physical activity in Falls and Arthritis study (BE-FIT)". It addresses imminent health challenge on moving away from “sickcare” and pivoting towards preventive healthcare as part of the nationwide effort on Healthier SG. Within BE-FIT we envision motivating vulnerable older adults to engage in healthy behavior by providing recommendations on improving accessibility (as well as preception thereof), in urban environment for uptake of physical activity. A deeper understanding of the interactions and interplay between BE and the high burden of falls and OA as proposed within the BE-FIT is crucial towards informing data-driven decisions on urban design and how the mobility-impaired elderly interact with their physical environment.

Project background

Falls result in severe physical as well as psychological impact among older adults. Beyond physical implications on injury-related trauma and in severe cases death, the psychosocial impact of falling can also be excruciating. Fear of falling can result in vicious cycles of decreased activity as well social isolation. These in turn lead to lower muscle strength and higher risk of future falls. In a similar manner, osteo-arthritis (OA) can lead to fear of movement (kinesiophobia) resulting in reduction of physical activity levels.

Within Work package 3 (WP3) of the BE-FIT study, we investigate movement patterns and features of walking outdoors and in the neighbourhoods among vulnerable older adults (suffering from OA as well as at high risk of falling). We will acquire these movement patterns and features using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement units (wearables such as ZurichMOVE or Axivity) sensors. These sensors are equipped with triaxial accelerometers and gyrospcopes and provide assessment of aspects such as impact and swing behaviour during different movements. Specifically, we will be addressing the following research questions:

1. What are the kinematic characteristics of walking among older adults with OA and/or previous falls under ecological settings (neighbourhoods etc)?
2. Do the kinematic characteristics of naturalistic walking predict physical activity rates?
3. Does the design of walkways (including overall layout, e.g. design of curbs, pathways etc and accessibility features e.g. size of the curbs, or height of side walk, ramps vs stairs) impact overall levels of physical activity as well as specifics of walking quality?

Task/Job Description:

As a Research Assistant in the BE-FIT, you will be responsible to

• Design, implement, and test the measurement protocol on long term monitoring using the state-of-the-art inertial measurement unit sensors.
• Assist project management for BE-FIT research activities at SEC including project planning activities, effort estimates, and on-site and remote exchange with several research partners, especially at the CNRS, RRIS and WH.
• Conduct research for the BE-FIT long-term monitoring within the Work package 3, including participant recruitment and scheduling of measurements, but also communication with participants on replacement of sensors and battery charging, and finally storage of data collection.
• Interact with end users as well as researchers at SEC, ETH Zurich, and local partners

Requirements:

Brief Description

The Application Assistant is responsible for in supporting the planning, development, operation and upgrading of the Secretariat’s System Applications such as the APEC Information Management Portal (AIMP), which is composed of four modules (APEC Collaboration System, Online Meeting System, Project Database, and Meeting Document Database), APEC Project Administration System (APAS), etc. The jobholder works closely with the Digital Strategist and Application manager regarding the Application matters (Process Modernization and AIMP) and is expected to show expertise in understanding the needs of stakeholders, drafting tender document, overseeing vendor in terms of development and operation activities. The jobholder is also involved in the support of the listed applications in terms of Operations and Troubleshooting. This is with close collaboration with the IT Administrator.

Key Result Areas

A. Planning

• Collaborate with the Digital Strategist and Applications Manager to identify the needs of either improvement or upgrade of existing intranet portal and AIMP systems through feedback from stakeholders and operational experience, and do the necessary planning, implementing actions to deliver better product to users.

Measurement: Ensure that the current system provides necessary functions to meet users’ needs, using the technology that is actively used in the market.

B. Operation and Maintenance

• Provide the highest availability of the intranet portal and AIMP system to internal and external users so that the system does not hinder the work of the users while maintaining the strong security level.

Measurement: Minimize unexpected downtime and ensure no security breaches.

C. User support

• Provide training for new and existing users on how to use AIMP systems and support user queries and issues.

Measurement: Ensure that user requests are handled in time.

Key Accountabilities / Duties

A. Planning

• Find out what should be improved or developed through user feedback and operational experience.
• Drafting the document to report the necessity of improvement, upgrade, or development of the system for management approval.
• Prepare the tender document and select the vendor through the procurement process.
• Perform project management, overseeing the vendor to deliver the product.

B. Operation and Maintenance

• Update system software and platform when updates or patches are available by the supplier.
• Check Regularly to confirm applications, system software, OS, and servers working well.
• Ensure that there is no security issue in collaboration with Cybersecurity Specialist.
• Ensure that backup is properly done in cooperation with IT Manager.
• Keep and update system documentation for operation and maintenance.
• Renew operational contract in time.

C. User Support

• Provide user training for new and existing users when necessary.
• Create and delete AIMP user accounts when requested.
• Handle user queries and support request regarding AIMP.

Job Description

We are looking for a highly motivated and competent research assistant to work on research focusing on peptide crystallization as a versatile platform technology for delivering biocompatible nanomaterials. The successful candidate will work with Dr Chen Wenqian to help with lab management and support ongoing research activities.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

a. Lab safety, ordering, and lab management (30%)
o To serve as a lab safety lead.
o To be responsible for lab ordering.
o To organise chemicals and consumables in the lab and update the inventory.
o To create and review standard operation protocols (SOPs) and risk assessments (RAs).
o To ensure cleanliness and tidiness of the lab.

b. Research tasks (70%)
o To perform peptide synthesis and characterization of synthesized peptides.
o To perform peptide crystallization and characterization of crystallized peptides.
o To prepare tablets from crystallized peptides and perform characterization of the prepared tablets.
o To test bioactivity of protein/peptide using bioassays.

Qualifications

Qualifications / Discipline:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, chemistry, life sciences, materials science, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related field.

Skills:
• Excellent time and project management skills.
• Excellent communication skills and great ability in written and spoken English.
• Be able to work independently and be a team player.

Experience:
• Experienced in bioassay preparation and handling.
• Experienced in crystallization and crystal characterization.
• Experienced in powder processing and characterization.
• Experienced in tablet preparation and characterization.
• Experienced in data analysis using softwares such as R, MatLab etc.
• Experienced in report writing and presentation preparation.

Objectives: The objective of PSGC is to provide trauma-informed care in a safe and nurturing environment to help the Children & Young Persons (CYPs) recover from their past traumatic experiences and promote their overall well-being.

Desired outcomes: The desired outcomes for the CYPs in the PSGC are as follows:

i. Safety from abuse and neglect while in care;

ii. Improved emotional and behavioural functioning in residential, school and family settings;

iii. Experience of stability while in care; and

iv. Reintegration with their families (or other appropriate permanency options, i.e. fostering, stepping down to main Home/other Homes) within 18 months of entry into the PSGC.

Your role & responsibilities as a Coach:

1. Help create and maintain a child-centred, homely therapeutic community that is responsive to the developmental needs of clients, where clients are enabled to grow holistically, work towards emotional stability and develop their full potential.

2. Familiarise oneself with the background, treatment plan and daily progress of all clients and help implement their treatment plans.

3. Provide individualised care and supervision of 1 - 2 CYPs, supporting the Supervisor/ Social Worker/ Psychologist/ Head of Dept in the intervention programmes carried out in the residential, school and family settings.

4. Conduct one face-to-face session (at least ½ hour) with their assigned CYPs every week, using therapeutic approaches and other intervention strategies such as OT and Positive Behavioural Plans.

5. Carry out the daily operational duties and supervise clients in their regular activities such as having their meals, going to school or attending programmes run by the SGC, and participating in these activities with the clients where appropriate.

6. Assist clients with any difficulties related to day-to-day issues in the dorm, and ensure their welfare and safety

7. Promote discipline among the clients and be a mentor or role model to them.

8. Assess and respond to crises or conflicts (including using MAPA skills) and escalate to supervisor or deputy head of the home when needed.

9. Provide feedback to the Deputy Head and Social Worker on clients’ behaviours and compliance with activities that are part of their treatment plan.

10. Participate in shift-to-shift communication, which includes completing daily documentation, reading the logbook and providing important handover information to staff at the change of every shift.

11. Liaise with clients’ parents / family regarding day leave or home leave (in consultation with the case worker / social worker).

12. Plan, implement and evaluate programmes that will complement the therapeutic goals developed by the Social worker.

13. Carry out structured activities according the PSGC’s schedule.

14. Organise events and outings for the clients.

15. Look into volunteer recruitment, training and scheduling.

16. Form partnerships with external agencies and vendors on the provision of value-add services to the clients.

17. To perform other tasks as assigned by Deputy Head, PSGC.

Academic & trades qualifications

· Min GCE “O” Well versed in English and a 2nd language (Chinese/Tamil/Hindi/Malay)

Desirable

· A Diploma in Social Services/ Counselling/ Psychology

Working Hours

You will be working on a 5-day work week and your working hours:

• 8am to 6pm or
• 12pm to 10pm
• 1 weekday off and Sunday rest day.

However, because of the nature of our ministry, all staff are expected to work 42 hours per week and that includes weekends or working late in the night. As such, depending on the work demands, we shall work out a Flexi-Work arrangement with you.
