As a Senior Scientific Officer, you will be tasked but not limited to planning and executing the grant-making process, annual budgeting, exploring funding opportunities, and managing documents and deadlines. We are looking for talented and dynamic Computational Biologists/Bioinformaticians/Data Analysts to work with a multidisciplinary group of scientists on the discovery of new targets for therapy in Diabetic Nephropathy (DN), a devastating complication of diabetes causing significant morbidity, mortality and human suffering. In Singapore, the incidence of DN as a cause of end-stage kidney disease is among the highest in the world. The job will be part of the NMRC-funded project called Diabetes Study in Nephropathy and other Microvascular Complications II that is coordinated by Duke-NUS Medical School, and will be based in within the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB) of Duke-NUS. The multi-omics data for the project have been already generated and are ready for analysis. The job is available immediately, and it will be for a period of 3 years, with possible extension depending on performance and funding availability.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of the DYNAMO II research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following: -

• Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
• Perform analysis of complex and large-scale genomics data, including (but not limited to) WGS and transcriptomic data (including single cell sequencing data).

Job Description

Having witnessed the achievements of the large models in 2023, there has been a new surge of machine learning and AI models in recent days, which again puts up the public concerns about the explosively increasing energy consumption during the model training phase. According to Dr. Sajjad Moazeni, an AI researcher at University of Washington, the training of GPT-3 roughly consumes 10 gigawatt-hour of electricity ^([1]), approximately equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of 440,000 average Singapore households in 2021 ^([2]).

Significant efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of the model training phase, in terms of hardware, model architecture, networking, and algorithm design, etc. The PI (Dr. Zhang Junyu) of this project would like to tackle this problem from the algorithmic perspective, by developing theoretical understanding of the open questions on the training algorithms, in terms of the convergence, complexity, local landscape properties, and potential algorithmic improvement based on the new theoretical findings.

Purpose of the post

The QC Analytical Chemist will be responsible to, and work closely with Head of QC, to ensure the successful and safe release of radiopharmaceuticals manufactured at CIRC. The QC Analytical Chemist’s principal role will be to perform all quality control tests required by pharmacopeia. Alongside with maintaining the inventory of raw materials, maintenance of equipment and all the necessary documentation required for the QC laboratory in compliance to PIC/S GMP.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The QC Analytical Chemist will be able to:

• Perform analytical chemistry methods (HPLC, GC, radioTLC etc) for ensuring that the radiopharmaceutical is safe for clinical use.
• Perform environmental monitoring as required by PIC/S GMP in the cleanrooms (environmental monitoring, airborne particle monitoring)
• Manage routine microbial tests such as microbial plate incubation, sterility testing, bioburden testing, etc and liaising with third party contractors if required.
• Handle raw materials management, including maintaining inventory status, purchase and receiving of raw materials.
• Establish, develop and validate QC Test Methods for the radiopharmaceutical QC release testing.
• Assist in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIN), Recordsheets (REC), etc and fill in Batch Manufacturing Records (BMR).
• Ensure that the appropriate documentation is in place.
• Support in managing of QC equipment and metabolite laboratory equipment, including qualifications, operations maintenance, cleaning, calibration and re-qualification.
