Job Description

The Experimental Marine Ecology Laboratory (EMEL) within the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a major new project “Shore Protection with Integrated Nature-based Solutions—Eco (SPINS-Eco)”. This interdisciplinary research aims to determine the optimal conditions for mangrove, seagrass, coral, and macroalgal establishment and growth within hybrid coastal protection systems in Singapore.

We are seeking passionate scientists who wish to develop innovative methods in the metagenomic assembly field. Our lab is focused on leveraging new technologies to better study microbial populations and their impact on human health. In this context, our lab has extensive experience in metagenomic analysis and has been involved in numerous large-scale studies exploring microbe diversity and dynamics, as well as the development of numerous tools widely used in the field.

Recent improvements in the sequencing technology field offer unique perspectives for metagenomic assemblies, reducing the gap to the full genomic reconstruction of complex microbial communities that can be further leveraged for comparative genomic analysis. The new Centre for Investor Protection aims to undertake independent research, public education and related activities to promote the improvement of investor protection in Singapore and beyond. Projects conducted by the centre should have significant implications for policy and practices relating to investor protection. The key types of research and activities to be conducted are:

(a) Practice and academic research

(c) Public education seminars and workshops
(d) Other activities directly related to the centre’s purpose

The Research Manager will report to the centre Director and is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the centre’s projects. This includes working with the centre Director and project leaders in designing and implementing research methodologies, analyzing data, providing actionable insights to key stakeholders; and overseeing and managing the writing and editing of case studies. The Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) aims to pioneer the development and discovery of new and more effective methods for the treatment, prevention and control of new and emerging pathogens. The key outcome of the research will be the early identification of new pathogens, out of which new diagnostic tests, treatments and control strategies will be developed.

This position is for a full-time Senior Research Fellow position. The Laboratory of Virus Evolution (LoVE) studies rapidly evolving respiratory RNA viruses including influenza, parainfluenza and coronaviruses. Our research helps to understand the molecular drivers of virus evolution and population dynamics, and their influence on virulence and pathogenicity.

The candidate is expected to play a critical role in generating and fostering a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research environment. The candidate should possess a strong background in molecular virology and/or immunology, and will utilize metagenomics sequencing and virologic techniques to understand the evolutionary dynamics of different RNA viruses. The candidate will be involved in developing antiviral antibody therapies in the prevention and treatment of virus disease.

Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with Asst. Prof. Patrick Rebentrost in the intersection of quantum algorithms and optimization, machine learning and/or finance. Sample topics include quantum algorithms for problems in supervised and unsupervised machine learning, algorithmic learning theory, and online learning, and quantum algorithms for financial problems such as portfolio optimization, pricing of financial derivatives, and hedging. The job will include the development of quantum algorithms in these areas, with provable quantum advantages and provable guarantees, when possible, in fault-tolerant models of quantum computation. The job will also include the development of algorithms that are easier to execute on available hardware such as variational and post-variational methods and quantum approximate optimization. Furthermore, the aim is to provide hardware implementations on available devices, comparisons between available hardware providers, and classical simulations of the quantum algorithms. For this purpose, the successful applicant will be granted significant independence concerning their research and receive generous travel funding. They will be expected to contribute to the group, for example by co-supervising student projects and assisting with outreach activities.

This role is funded by a Pharma Innovation Programme Singapore (PIPS) research grant. The primary responsibility of the role is to deliver a novel software solution, which supposedly will run on discrete-event simulation (DES) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) optimization algorithms, to help pharmaceutical companies enhance the agility of their multi-product manufacturing process in an uncertain environment. To this end, by working closely with subject matter experts from the PIPS member companies (i.e., GSK, MSD, Pfizer, and Syngenta), you will:

• design and execute survey / interviews with subject matter experts to understand the agreed aspects of agility and use them as the basis for this project
• develop the DES model libraries on the AnyLogic platform to simulate different kinds of activities involved in the full pharmaceutical supply chain
• develop the DES plant model optimizer using explainable DRL algorithms with user-defined objective functions
• demonstrate the utility against company-supported use cases
• prepare a user manual to help the companies quickly grasp the knowledge to use or modify the novel utility

Key Responsibilities:

1. Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.
2. Undertake these responsibilities in the project:visit PIPS member companies’ production sites in Singapore for data collection and model building
   train and validate the DES models using historical plant data or synthetic data
   develop the DES model optimizer by implementing appropriate DRL algorithms and user-defined objective functions (e.g., CAPEX/OPEX, sustainability metrics, etc.), with explainability on the suggested decisions from the algorithms
   present research findings in meetings with PIPS member companies; prepare peer-reviewed publications on the findings
   guide junior researchers and undergraduate students on their research activities
   engage and communicate with vendors/suppliers for purchasing software, and visit vendors’ facilities for both software evaluation and training purpose.
